Sanderson's personal history is entwined with Orpheus Group in a number of ways. His wife, Rachel Sanderson, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 1993 and placed in cryogenic suspension by Orpheus Group's parent company, Eurydice. When Eurydice became Orpheus, he teamed up with Agent Paul Ritter to investigate possible ties between Eurydice, NextWorld, and Bishop, but did not get far before he was assassinated, his death made to look like a suicide. His ghost was the target of an unsanctioned mission led by deceased Agent Paul Ritter. Since that abortive mission, Sanderson was spotted a number of times haunting sites where his wife's body might have been stored. He was eventually dragged away by spectres during an assault on one of Orpheus' secret creche storage sites, and was not seen again for many months. Recently he returned to warn Orpheus Agents of the Second Deluge.
Sanderson is now a spectre who has somehow managed to claw his way back to individual sentience. His ghost-form is extremely unstable, displaying black, dripping claws and bony spines that periodically erupt from his back. He finds communication difficult, as the spectre hive-mind is constantly intruding on his thoughts.
